Scientific tests

Compare the original work as it looks to the naked eye with scientific analyses conducted by the Center for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France (C2RMF).

Through this comparison, we can:

  • discover Leonardo’s preparatory work and pentimenti (infrared reflectography, IRR – top right),
  • observe the delicacy of the paint layer and the nature of its support (x-radiography – bottom left),
  • distinguish the successive layers of varnish, the accidents, and the areas of overpainting and retouching dating from after the painter’s death (ultraviolet fluorescence, UVF – bottom right).
